Teen Who Allegedly Hit Cop Car ‘Couldn’t See Because Of Cannabis Smoke’

A teen who is accused of ramming a police car, breaking a police officer’s leg, told cops he couldn’t see properly because his car windows had fogged up after smoking cannabis with his pals.

Benjamin Saurini, 19, from Melbourne in Australia, said he had been smoking with his mates on a Friday night and is alleged to have taken off after he spotted police on patrol, but panicked and hit their car.

He is accused of breaking the leg of a senior officer by pinning him against the car.

According to 9 News, Saurini is alleged to have read a news article about the incident and the cop’s leg and realised he was in trouble.

It’s then alleged he removed the plates from the car before dumping it, but handed himself in to police after his parents were called.

His trial has been adjourned until a youth justice assessment can be carried out. In the meantime, Saurini has been granted bail under the conditions that he doesn’t attempt to drive a car or take drugs. He has also agreed to an 8pm curfew.

Saurini was originally hit with 14 charges, including ramming an emergency vehicle, assaulting a police officer and unlicensed driving.

The court was told the teen was suitable for a programme which would require weekly check-ins as well as ongoing drug education and treatment.

His dad John told the court he believed his son had started taking drugs three years ago, but that he only realised he had a drug problem around eight months ago.

He is due back in court in September.

A suspect was caught on CCTV with the light over his shoulder and grinning.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers have today released CCTV images of a man after police lights were stolen from a car at Sunderland Railway Station.

“The incident happened at 4.29am on Wednesday, December 26, 2018.

“Officers believe the man shown in these CCTV images may have information which could help their investigation.”
