Avail Cannabis Clinic signs letter of intent with Barrie, Ont. pharmacy chain

Avail Cannabis Clinic is advancing its expansion plans with the move to sign a letter of intent (LOI) with Express Aid Pharmacy in Barrie, Ont., open a franchise in Toronto and rebrand its Tweed Main Street location in Barrie by Dec. 1.

The LOI calls for opening two family, walk-in-style clinics that will offer select conventional and cannabis prescription services, notes a statement from Avail Cannabis. “This initiative will be a first for the industry with future collaboration initiatives already in the works,” reports the company, which has more than 25 years of combined traditional and marijuana-based prescription experience.

“The collaboration with Express Aid Pharmacy will position us at the front line of pharmacy-related cannabis distribution, once it becomes available,” says Justin Whitehall, CEO and clinic director of Avail Cannabis.

“As a local leader in health and wellness, it is important for us to support medical alternatives within the community. We look forward to this new initiative that will provide much-needed, walk-in clinic services by our pharmacy site,” notes Express Aid pharmacist Andrew Schonbe.

Also with a view to expanding, Avail Cannabis reports that the company has signed the first medical marijuana clinic franchise agreement with its clinic opening in a medical building in Toronto. “Our collaborative effort to create a welcoming environment, raise awareness and streamline accessibility through Avail’s medical channels and industry experience will be a benefit for all in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area),” says Gopi Mahen, owner of the franchise.

“As we begin execution of (the expansion) plan in Q1 of 2019, we are confident that our pharmacy strategy will provide a more inclusive environment for all our Barrie patients, further reducing stigma,” Whitehall points out. “Our franchise model will also allow us to rapidly expand while providing a streamlined clinic operation experience through Avail’s existing medical channels,” he continues.

Last, the rebranding of the Barrie location follows what Avail Cannabis characterizes as “successful operation” since the location opened its doors this past July.
