Montreal police will be allowed to smoke cannabis on their personal time

With cannabis legalization just days away, Montreal police will be permitted to smoke recreational cannabis during their personal time.

According to the city’s new policy, which is one of the most lenient in the country, police officers will be allowed to smoke during their off time, so long as they show up to work “fit for duty.”

This is in direct contrast to both the Calgary Police Service and the Toronto Police Service, members of which will be prohibited from using recreational pot (Calgary is embracing complete abstinence, while Toronto has a not-within-28-days rule).

In a press conference at City Hall on Wednesday, police spokesman André Durocher claimed Montreal police will go forth with their principle that if you can perform well at work, you can consume cannabis, alcohol or medication.

Durocher says Montreal’s marijuana policy was created according to the city’s culture and values that best represent the citizens.

As for civilians, Mayor Valérie Plante said that those of legal age will be able to smoke marijuana anywhere that smoking tobacco is permitted.

Cannabis and its related products will be banned where tobacco is already banned such as in hospitals, schools, universities, sports centres, and bus shelters, all of which were part of the provincial legislation adopted last summer.
