Northampton, Leicester retail marijuana shops the first to receive final licenses from Cannabis Control Commission

Massachusetts marijuana regulators approved final licenses for retail pot shops in Leicester and Northampton.

Cultivate Holdings LLC, which has a medical marijuana dispensary in Worcester County’s Leicester, is seeking to open a retail shop at the same location.

The Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday signed off on final licenses for manufacturing, retailing and cultivation. Cultivate received provisional licenses earlier this year.

Regulators also approved a final retail license for New England Treatment Access, LLC, which runs a medical marijuana dispensary in Northampton and seeks to open a retail shop in the same location.

Even with the final licenses, the open dates for the facilities remain unclear, since they have to meet additional conditions before throwing open their doors. For example, employees must receive badges. 

Advocates for legalization have pushed the Cannabis Control Commission to work faster towards opening retail pot shops, saying the state is missing out on millions of dollars of revenue.

While missing the July 1 target date for open retail pot shops in Massachusetts, commissioners have approved dozens of provisional licenses.
